THE COTTER PIN, FOR TIGHTENING THE CASTELLATED NUTS AND THREADED ENDS

The cotter pin is a fastener generally used in the construction of machines and vehicles. It is distinguished from other pins by its folded steel body so as to give it a head, which is very practical in the event of disassembly. Zoom on the split pins for professionals developed by Würth!

A FASTENER USED IN GENERAL MECHANICS, AUTOMOTIVE...

The cotter pin is part of the large family of pins, these metal cylinders intended to serve as an axis or to immobilize one part in relation to another. It is found in particular in everything related to general mechanics and in car garages for light vehicles and heavy goods vehicles (HGV). It can be used in particular:

• to secure the castle nuts with bolts
• to hold threaded ends with a suitable hole
• to fix certain specific bolts ...

HOW TO INSTALL A COTTER PIN IN A HOLE, AND HOW TO DISASSEMBLE IT

To install a cotter pin, simply insert it into the hole and bend its ends. Its length should ideally correspond to twice the length of the bore. If you want to dismantle it, you must fold down its ends and then extract the part by pulling on its head. Note also that the split pins:

• can be shortened
• must not be reused after disassembly, as their structure changes during tightening and loosening.
