HIGH QUALITY METAL DRILLS
Unlike wood, concrete or stone, drilling in metal does not produce drilling dust, but metal chips. In order to effectively remove these chips from the borehole and prevent overheating of the drill bit, metal or carbide drill bits must be equipped with a special drill tip. They are therefore equipped with a special helical thread to efficiently eject processed materials.
THE MAIN TYPES OF METAL USED ON DRILLS
A helical drill for very hard metal must have different properties from a drill for relatively soft metals such as aluminium. All helical drills from Würth have coloured rings to identify the materials and areas of application for which the drill is suitable.
3 types of metal drills commonly offered:
HSS: High-speed working steel is the base material for HSS metal drills. This steel is very hard and heat resistant. HSS helical drills are thus suitable, for example, for longer drilling at high speeds.
HSCO: Würth HSCO helical drills have a higher cobalt content than conventional HSS drills, making them even more resistant to heat.
HSS TiN: HSS drills coated with titanium nitride can be recognized by their golden colour. The extra layer of titanium makes them extremely resistant to wear.
ALSO CONSIDER THE MATERIAL TO BE DRILLED WHEN CHOOSING A DRILL BIT
For additional guidance, a two-character code at the end of the type designation indicates the material for which the Würth helical drills are suitable:
RN: recommended for hard materials such as steel and other metals.
RH: recommended for very hard and difficult to machine materials such as Hardox
RW: recommended for soft materials such as aluminium
Use the colour rings to quickly find the right metal drill to drill:
Steel: blue ring
Stainless steel: green ring
Refractory steels: red ring
Aluminium: yellow ring
Coated cutting tools: additional black ring
Universal: purple ring
METAL DRILLS ADAPTED TO YOUR PROJECT
It is not only the properties of the material, but also the shape and thickness of the metal that determine the choice of the appropriate helical drill. For drilling thin-walled steel sheets and tubes, it is recommended to use a short drill with a tip angle of 118°, which can be precisely positioned and does not get stuck. For deep drilling, an HSS helical drill with a peak angle of 130° is suitable for optimal chip removal and heat dissipation. On the other hand, it is better to first drill the steel with an HSCO metal drill.
PRECISION HELICAL TIP: PERFECT HOLES ON ANY MATERIAL
The helical tip is a fundamental tool to make highly precise drill holes in any type of material without leaving marks. The helical drill bits are particularly resistant and, thanks to the quality of the materials, do not ruin either the surface or the tool itself and are not subject to wear over time. The helical tips for professionals are available in a wide range of sizes and diameters, to meet all application needs.
Our online catalogue includes a very wide selection of bits that allow professionals to intervene with ease and precision on any type of material, such as stainless steel, aluminium, hardwood and titanium. The range dedicated to the specific helical tip for metal includes the HSS helical tip with exclusive Smart step technology, that is the first helical tip with stepped tip geometry; and the HSCO helical tip of the RN MDF type, a versatile and high quality solution for extremely precise processes. Professionals can also find helical tips for iron and the helical tips for steel that perform to the maximum even on the most solid materials. For processing on stainless steel we provide professionals with specific tips that, in addition to ensuring high-level performance, are resistant to heat and pressure. They guarantee quick drilling with perfect chip removal and wide chipping with small dimensions.
THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE HELICAL TIPS HSS
HSS helical tips are distinguished by high hardness, good strength and to ensure precision drilling. Professionals can buy numerous references, such as the RW-type helical tip that ensures an extremely precise drilling thanks to the short design. The cross sharpening also guarantees an optimal centring effect even on round materials, eliminating the need for pilot drilling / marking with an awl. This HSS helical tip is perfect for constant drilling quality, while ensuring a high degree of precision and long service life. Our helical drills are designed to be used on any type of machine: in addition to the helical drill bit there are those specific for battery screwdrivers, for the perforator with pedestal and for the milling / drilling centre. Among the cobalt helical tips, most appreciated by professionals is the HSCO 8 with extra short drilling section and reinforced core. Helical tips are available with both left and right rotations.
